About MeAlthough steeped in the Scottish painterly tradition which embraced the work of James Guthrie, John Lavery and Robert Brough, Peploe's injection of colour came from France. An early period of study in Paris during the 1890s and subsequent visits to France opened his eyes to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting. Evident in this painting is the influence of Cézanne in the broad angular way in which the objects are depicted. It is a sumptuous essay with rich contrasts: bold black outlines and luminous whites are charged against brightly coloured drapes. Painted in the 1920s it is generally considered to represent the pinnacle of Peploe's artistic achievement.
