About MeGeorge Leslie Hunter's formative years were spent far away from Scotland. In 1892, aged fifteen, Hunter went with his family to live in California. Exploiting a natural talent for drawing, he worked as a magazine illustrator, first in San Francisco and later back in Glasgow. He visited Paris in 1904/5, where he would have seen the work of the French Post-Impressionists. Later trips to France confirmed his admiration for the work of Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse and van Gogh. By 1924, the four Scottish Colourists were exhibiting together, having in common an affinity with the contemporary art of France and Post-Impressionism in particular. Like Peploe, Hunter repetadly paints the same group of objects. Re-asserting the importance of still-life as a pure vehicle for painting, he returns again and again to arrangements of flowers, fruit and a few studio props.
