About MeBawden trained at Cambridge Art School and then The Royal College of Art. There he met Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious both of whom would have a great influence on his work. He was fascinated with book design, and his earlier work was devoted to book illustration, posters, prints and wallpaper.

He saw no distinction between the artist and the designer and this belief is echoed even in his landscapes, which show his interest in depicting the texture, form and surface pattern of things, rather than atmosphere. Although his skill lay in his graphic talent, Bawden regarded his watercolours as his greatest achievement.
