About MeThis square stoneware box with cover is slab-built, with the cover sitting snugly on a recessed rim on the base.

It is glazed inside and out in a white slip and dark ochre brown ash glaze with red iron slip trailed over creating a pattern of wavy ribbons on the cover. The box is also decorated with red iron slip on all four sides - two opposite sides feature a cross hatch pattern and the other two sides are decorated with abstract circles. The pattern extends from foot to top of cover on all four sides.

Hughes frequently used ash gathered from various places close to the pottery to achieve rich colours of glaze when the piece was fired at a high temperature in a reduction kiln.
