Bonnard preferred the light and vegetation of the North of France and in this painting he concentrates on capturing the effects of a wind-blown sky and the burst of light that illuminates the land and sky before a storm. The scene is framed by the brightly coloured vegetation in the foreground, through which can be seen a smooth blue river and above it scudding clouds moving fast across a sunny sky.

More About Me
Bonnard has been called an ‘intimist,’ as he is well known for drawing dreamy, domestic scenes, made even more personal by his preference to draw from memory.
