About MeChalmers studied under Robert Scott Lauder in Edinburgh. Later, through the art critic and collector John Forbes White, Chalmers came to admire particulary the art of two of the Old Masters, Velasquez and Rembrandt.

Their influence is clearly evident in this portrait of John Forbes White's daughter Rachel or 'Aitchie'. As in many of Rembrandt's portraits she peers out from a dark room. Her features are sensitively and softly modelled in a series of tonal graduations.
