In this still life study of dead widgeon (a type of duck) Lewis shows the muted and sombre palette that Sickert also preferred. The painting has a sense of stillness and quiet that distinguished much of Lewis' art.
From 1929 Morland Lewis exhibited with the London Group, which had been founded in 1913 to promote modern art and encourage and support artists to show their work. Lewis took up a teaching post at Chelsea School of Art but the Second World War brought his career to a tragic end - whilst serving as a camouflage officer he was killed in the North Africa Campaign on 4 August 1943.
