The business was successful and grew during the Victorian period. Davidson & Kay benefited from Royal custom from 1857 onwards when the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria, was a customer. The firm was granted the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1884, although this warrant allows Davidson and Kay to use the royal arms with relation to George V.
The warrant is made out in the names of James Petrie Kay, Harvey George Kay and Alexander Leslie Strachan. It is dated 27th of November 1910. On cancellation of the warrant, the coat of arms which was displayed in the shop were modified to comply with the law.
