About MeWilliam Henry Hunt was a watercolour painter who almost exclusively devoted himself to still-life painting. He was influential upon the Pre-Raphaelites and the Victorian art critic John Ruskin greatly admired Hunt's passion for natural detail and vivid colouring.

The artist earned himself the nickname 'Bird's nest' Hunt, due to his still-lifes painted in minute detail, using watercolour and bodycolour over a background of Chinese white. Although his favoured subject was birds' nests with eggs in them, in this particular example he uses the same laborious technique to depict a display of fruits, shown in a natural setting, as if they have just dropped to the ground.
