About MeAugustus John was a dominant force in British painting in the early years of the 20th century but with his concentration on portrait commissions his reputation was surpassed by more progressive contemporaries. The sitter, Mrs A.A. Jack was the wife of Prof. Jack, Professor of English at the University of Aberdeen. This portrait may have been painted before she was married, when Miss Nichol was visiting her brother Pringle Nichol who lived in Kensington and moved in artistic circles.
