About MeW. Y. MacGregor is considered by many to be the "father" of the Glasgow School. In 1881 he began winter life drawing classes in his studio. Attended by Paterson, Morton, Roche, Lavery and Hornel, he encouraged these artists to abandon anecdotal subjects and to use a freer technique and bolder colour.

He once advised his younger colleagues to:

"hack the subject out as you would were you using an axe, and try to realise it, get its bigness. Don't follow any school, there are no schools in art".
