About MeAt the time this photograph was taken the granite industry was flourishing in Aberdeen. It had grown from virtually nothing in the 1830s to become one of the city's major employers. Steam driven machinery had been introduced round about 1832 but well on to the end of the century much of the work still relied upon the manual skills of skilled men. Here we can see a good variety of the hand tools employed including many of them a variation on a hammer: the figure second from the right in the foreground holds a bush hammer whilst just behind and to the left is a man with an axe. The bush hammer was intoduced from the U.S.A.
