About MeThese three men are all polishing granite slabs using vertical polishers. The polishing ring ground an abrasive like iron shot or carborundum against the granite to give a smooth finish. Vertical polishers were phased out in the 1940s and 1950s.

Polishing is a wet process and can get messy. The man on the right has a splash board fixed to the side of the slab to stop the abrasive solution spilling out.
