About MeAn oval-shaped token which bears the following inscriptions: Side 1: Asscit. Congn. Original Seceders; Side 2: John Aitken Minister 1827. It is rare for the minister's full name to appear; if he is identified at all it is usually by his initials only. The Seceders' first church in Aberdeen was opened in 1810 on a site in Rosemount Viaduct approximately opposite where the Central Library now stands. John Aitken was its first ordained minister and he took charge of his small congregation in July 1811.
Mr Aitken's ministry was a long one and in September 1850 his congregation presented him with a purse of sovereigns to mark the beginning of his 40th year in office. He retired in 1857. The site of the first Seceders' church was acquired for redevelopment in the 1890s and a new building was provided in Skene Terrace.
