About MeIn this work a mother, laden with a bundle of firewood, ushers her two small children through a thickly-wooded scene. The two children, poorly dressed but wrapped-up warmly against the winter weather, help their mother to carry home the fuel. All three figures blend into the background, their faces are not clearly delineated but seem indistinct - almost ghostlike. The resignation of all three, though, shines through, giving this small picture a solemnity and force quite unexpected in such an unaffected and seemingly unsophisticated work.John Phillip
