About MeSylvia Gosse lived and worked in the Camden Town area of London. In 1908 she met the celebrated Walter Richard Sickert and became one of a number of artists who gathered in his studio on Saturday afternoons. As a woman she was prevented from joining the official society - the Camden Town Group - when it was established in 1911. In spite of this, Gosse continued her friendship with Sickert, helping him to run one of his teaching schools. Like other Camden Town artists her subjects are taken from everyday life. 'Feu' means deceased and suggests that the artist's mother is on her death bed.More About Me
Asked to explain her work the artist Sylvia Gosse replied, 'Oh but it is simply a question of light and shade.'
