This figure study is thought to represent the biblical character, Rebecca, although she is usually depicted with Eliezer, the servant of her future husband Isaac. In the Old Testament story Eliezer is sent to find a wife for his master. Here Rebecca stands alone, suggesting that this may be part of a larger composition, possibly representing Rebecca being addressed by Eliezer.
More About Me
Early on Dyce studied in Rome, where the influence of the German Nazarene group pushed him towards religious themes. In the bible, Rebecca was the wife of Isaac and mother of Esau and Jacob
