About MeThe sitter Helen Landale, married the noted historian John Steill of Baldowrie House, Kettins, Blairgowrie, in Perthshire. He died in Edinburgh in 1871, leaving about £4000, subject to the life rent of a woman (possibly his wife Helen) who died in 1877, for the erection of a bronze statue to the memory of Sir William Wallace, for the city of Aberdeen.

This larger-than-life statue of Scotland's national hero, by sculptor W. Grant Stevenson, was unveiled in 1888 and can still be seen to the right when exiting Aberdeen Art Gallery.

More About Me

The sitter was married to the noted historian John Steill of Baldowrie House, who bequeathed money for the erection of the bronze statue depicting Sir William Wallace, not far from this gallery!
