About MeFrom 1952 Joan Eardley was a regular inhabitant of Catterline and divided her subject matter between the sea below the cliffs and the agricultural land above. In this work she has chosen the edge of a field from which a broad swathe has already been cut, revealing the bold scarlet of late poppies and sorrel. The field is bounded by a line of trees and above is a lowering sky, pointing up the brilliance of the standing corn.Joan Eardly loved to introduce varied textures into her paintings. Some landscapes even have grasses and wildflowers pressed into the paint surface. Here she has used a palette knife to spread the paint over a wide area. In other places she has drawn the end of her brush handle through the wet paint, leaving deeply incised lines. The intensity of her response to the natural scene is conveyed by her paint surface and her daring use of colour.
More About Me
