About MeThe technique known as Japanning, which was developed during the 17th century, was used excessively during the late 19th and early 20th century. It was basically a European imitation of Oriental lacquer using spirit and oil varnishes to blacken wood. Morris and Co. were amongst many companies and designers who employed this technique. They produced several ranges of complete sets of furniture decorated with a Japanned surface including the Rossetti Arm Chairs.late 18th Century
