About MeJohn Tunnard was a trained textile designer before he turned to painting at the age of thirty. This background gave him an understanding of stylization in pattern and form, as well as abstraction. Influenced by Surrealism, he explored in 'Weather Forecast' illusionary and abstract space created by textured overlays, using semi-transparent and intersecting forms with bright floating spots of colour.

During the Second World War Tunnard, who lived and worked in Cornwall, became a part of the war effort working as a coastguard. Inevitably he spent much time gazing out to sea, past cliff and rock, into infinite space, where the ever changing pattern of light was to become for him the inspiration for his future compositions.
