About MePeploe was persuaded to visit Iona by Francis Cadell in 1920 and over the next ten years he would consistently return to the island. It provided him with a wealth of views and inspiration. Peploe's annual sojourns to Iona produced a body of work in which the unusual pink-toned sands and rocks were reworked in ever-changing weather, in much the same way as the Impressionists had painted landscapes under different lighting conditions. Whereas previously still-life had been his mainstay, the landscape of Iona was to become a recurring image within his work.In 'Iona, Grey Day', Peploe records the coastline of the island under cloud-streaked skies. He suggests the dazzling light and atmosphere with spare application of pink, blue and grey paint.
More About Me
Peploe's regular visits to Iona, off the west coast of Scotland, were the inspiration for many of his works. Do you have somewhere you like to revisit?
