About MeSickert held an affinity with the working method of Degas; he too would fully explore aspects of a motif from large numbers of studies - he attached great importance to what he called the 'cooking' side of art. Sickert haunted the theatres and music halls of London and Paris, where the germination of a painting would be conceived, as he sat in the semi-darkness, making numerous rapid drawings of the players on the stage and the vulgar classes in the audience. This was a world that thrilled and inspired him.
