About MeAberdeen born John Phillip was one of the most popular artists of the Victorian era. His early Scottish genre subjects of tightly knit family groups echo the tradition of David Wilkie. However, following a series of visits to Spain, his painting style became bold, colourful and flamboyant.

This undated study most likely portrays a member of the Spanish militia. Phillip has finished the upper portion of the sketch quite highly, with particular attention to the militiaman's swarthy features, in a portrait style reminiscent of the Spanish master Velazquez.
