About MeThe portraits of David Martin have been overshadowed by those of his teacher Allan Ramsay and his successor Henry Raeburn. However during the 1780's, when his work was painted, Martin had no serious artistic rivals in the Scottish capital.

Ramsay's influence informs the overt naturalness of many of Martin's portraits. Yet there is a slightly stilted and formal quality to Captian Hunter, which may be a reflection of the sitter's military bearing. Hunter is shown wearing the red and gold uniform of the Bengal Infantry. He had been commissioned as captain two years prior to the date of the portrait.
More About Me

Martin, a pupil of Alan Ramsay, was a successful portraitist. His painting of Benjamin Franklin hangs in the White House.
