About MeDavid Allan practised as a portrait painter, specialising in conversation pieces modelled on Zoffany's paintings of this type. However, it was as a genre artist that Allan made his reputation - he popularised the anecdotal scenes of everyday life that were to figure so prominently in the work of later artists like David Wilkie.

Frances Erskine (1716-1776) was the sister of Lord Erskine. Allan's father had come to prominence as the estate manager of the Erskine's Alloa colliery. The family commissioned several portraits from Allan and sponsored his expedition to Rome from 1764-67.
