About MeAllan Ramsay is often considered to be the premier Scottish portrait painter of the mid 18th century, a golden age of great cultural and intellectual advancements.

Miss Janet Shairp (b.1730) was the second daughter of Thomas Shairp, 5th Laird of Houston, West Lothian. Although the influence of the French rococo has not yet been fully assimilated into Ramsay's style, this picture displays a new informality of design. There is a delightful naturalism in his depiction of Janet Shairp's frank and unaffected gaze - she confronts us with a personality that speaks to us across the centuries.
