About MeEpstein is one of the outstanding British sculptors of the twentieth century, particularly recognised for his portraits which extended the traditional genre into a new expressive domain. He practised direct carving and a truth to material - concepts that were central to Modernist practice. In 1921 Epstein met Kathleen Garman who after thirty years, was to become his second wife. Her beauty immediately captivated him and the following day he began the first in a series of portraits of her. When he embarked on 'Girl with Gardenias', more than twenty-five years later, it was his first full-length or larger than life portrait for many years.
