Keywords
The creation of this figure was in itself fragmentary, for it is thought to have been constructed from two separate studies made at a much earlier date. Whereas the legs were probably done from the living model, the torso seems to have been inspired by a Michelangelo drawing.
In 1875, after seeing the works of Michelangelo, Rodin wrote to Bourdelle: 'Michelangelo freed me from academicism'.

The first cast of this model was made in 1877, but this particular version was commissioned in 1951 by the Rodin Museum and produced by Rodin's original foundry.
