About MeIn his figurative sculptures Rodin creates not merely a personal view of the human form and anatomy but also a fully comprehensive statement about the whole condition of mankind. This armless, headless figure is the sculptor's recognition of the expressive possibilities in a modern work, yet evokes classical sculpture of the past, broken and fragmented by the ravages of time.

The creation of this figure was in itself fragmentary, for it is thought to have been constructed from two separate studies made at a much earlier date. Whereas the legs were probably done from the living model, the torso seems to have been inspired by a Michelangelo drawing.

In 1875, after seeing the works of Michelangelo, Rodin wrote to Bourdelle: 'Michelangelo freed me from academicism'.
