About MeFrancis Derwent Wood was son of an American father and an English mother. He studied at Gaillard, Lausanne, Switzerland, at Karlsruhe, at the Royal Naval College of Art and the Royal Academy schools, London. He was assistant to Alphonse Legros at the Slade School and to Sir Thomas Brock at the Royal Academy schools.

He also worked for a time in Scotland, where he was modelling master at Glasgow School of Art and ended his teaching career as Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art.
