About MeMany copper alloy objects were excavated from the site of the Carmelite friary, the Green, Aberdeen. This is an example of twisted wire rings and a pin shaft found during the most recent excavation in 1994.
Twisted wire rings were mainly found in graveyard soils at this excavation. They are associated with fastening of clothing and were probably used for fixing shrouds.
Copper can decay very quickly in the soil and often survives only as unidentifiable lumps. Some of the copper objects may have survived well in these circumstance because they were in contact with cloth, leather or wood.
