About MeThis brooch is made from copper alloy roughly shaped into a circle and inset at irregular intervals with pearls, of which only two remain. This brooch would have been a treasured possession and was found in the demolition material from the friary.
The copper alloy is very well preserved as it is very prone to decay in the soil. Many copper alloy objects are completely lost because before they can be excavated they turn to dust in the soil. After removal from the ground they must be conserved.
The pin for attaching the brooch on to a garment is broken. Brooches were used for fastening items of clothing such as cloaks and would have been in use for long periods of time. This one may have been lost or became impossible to repair.
More About Me
There are only two pearls left on this brooch, although there are spaces for six in total. Does this make you wonder where the remaining four have ended up?
