About MeKoson was born in Kanazawa, Japan. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Japanese Painting Association and a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Art from c.1900. He was highly acclaimed for his flower and bird prints, or 'kacho-e'. A large number of his works were produced primarily for a western market, the artist having been encouraged by an eminent American philosopher and art critic, Ernest Francisco Fenollosa."Carp Leaping" epitomizes the characteristics of Koson's early works, notable for their realistic depiction of animals, simple and accurate composition, muted colors and long narrow formats.
The signature on the lower edge is that of Koson. In 1912, Koson adopted the name Shoson, which he used to sign his paintings. However he still continued to use his original name and sign some of his prints thus after this date.
