About MeThis is an early figurative work by William Scott, who is better known today for later his still lifes and abstract works. The sitter is the artist's wife Mary and was painted in France, where Scott and his wife had moved in order to set up their own painting school. Scott was of the opinion that it was one of the best works of this period.

Scott's knowledge of French art is evident in the way he gives his sitter a monumental and robust quality. She is delineated by a strong outlines, calling to mind the figure types of Gauguin and Matisse.

More About Me

The sitter is the artist's wife Mary. What challenges do you think it might pose to paint someone you knew so well?
