About MeRichard Robertson studied at Glasgow School of Art, where he was taught by Benno Schotz. Clear links can be traced between this work and Schotz's Thank Offering (also on display in this room). Both artists have used delicate red Dumfriesshire sandstone for their sculptures, but whilst Schotz has cut the stone on the cross, so that the striations suggest at the figure emerging from water, Robertson has cut the figure with the grain of the stone on the vertical. In perfect symmetry, the visible lines in the stone come to meet at the front and back of the nude figure, thus emphasising her sensual qualities.
Apparently lost in thought she appears distant and self contained, unconscious of onlookers.
In 1946 Robertson was appointed Lecturer in Sculpture at Gray's School of Art, where he worked until his retirement in 1979. His Public Commissions include Freedom (Hazelhead Park) and The Whistler, (Alford School).
