The Disruption is the name given to the time when the annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland was split in two over the question of patronage - who appointed ministers to their charges. 474 ministers, led by Dr Welsh left the Church of Scotland over this issue and formed the Free Church of Scotland. Support for the Free Church was strong in Aberdeen, where all 15 of the city's ministers and sizeable proportions of their congregations joined the new church.
The brooch was possibly made for the wives of the ministers who supported the Disruption to wear as a token of their allegiance.
