About MeAs the Japanese embraced Western culture and adopted its dress, traditional costume was abandoned for suits and gowns. Discarded kimonos found their way to Europe, and were snapped up by lovers of Japanese culture. This pale pink, silk kimono dressing-gown was given to the donor by a friend who had acquired it in the early 20th century. It was originally a Japanese under-robe known as a nagajuban, which was worn with a matching kimono. The distinctively long sleeves suggest that the robe was worn by a young unmarried woman. It was later altered to become a western style dressing gown with the addition of the embroidery.More About Me
