About MeDuring the 1920s, Samuel John Peploe continued to develop and experiment with still life painting. Though he is best known as an artist who used varied, pure colours, towards the end of his career his colours became more muted and his brushwork became more loose.
This painting, entitled Chops, shows how Peploe had developed an eye for harmonious composition over his career. The jagged edges of the chops are echoed in the cloth underneath them. The minimal colours are varied with shadows and highlights to the extent that Peploe can include white drapery in the background and on the table, as well as a white plate, without the work becoming flat.
