About MeAround 1912 Peploe's work took a new direction - the shapes became more angular, the colours more vibrant. His Edinburgh dealers, Aitken Dott refused to show his new work, believing that it would not sell sufficiently well. Peploe turned instead to the more adventurous Glasgow dealer, Alexander Reid, having his first exhibition there in 1915.Archie Hyslop, an early collector of many of the Colourists' paintings, who bequeathed this work to Aberdeen Art Gallery, described his first reaction to the paintings when they were in Glasgow; 'I had never seen anything in art similar to these pictures, and I did not understand them. They really startled me for, to my eyes they were so ultra-modern. The formal manner in which the tulips were painted, and their brilliant colour against equally strong draperies, was at the time beyond my comprehension'.
