About MeHayden moved to Paris in 1907 and became a French National in 1924. From 1915, he came under the influence of Cubist painters, such as Jacques Lipchitz and Juan Gris.

This still life reflects the second phase of Cubism when artists began thinking about the construction of a work of art and introduced 'papiers colles' or collage into the picture. In this work, rather than affixing newspaper to the canvas, the suggestion of a fragment of newspaper has been painted in oil. In fact the whole image has been painted to give the illusion of fragments and layers of collage.

In the right hand corner is a curtain painted with greater modelling. Later, Hayden was to revert to a more naturalistic style which is evident in two lyrical landscapes in Aberdeen's collections.
