About MeGibson was largely a self-taught artist but came under the influence of the French Barbizon School of artists of the 1870s and 80s. These artists were Realist painters who depicted scenes of ordinary life.

Like Peploe and Cadell, Gibson painted on the west-coast of Scotland. His view of the island of Eigg shares many of the qualities of Peploe's 'Blue Sea, Iona' in terms of the skilful way in which the artist captures the effect of light. Although similar in composition, Peploe develops further the Cézannesque simplification of volumes and depicts his scene in broader, more angular brushstrokes.
