About MeThis shallow stoneware bowl illustrates Edward Hughes' assured handling of ash glazes. Here ash glazes in a dark green, pale green and white intermingle with a reddish-brown iron tenmoku glaze to create a harmonious streaked effect.
Edward Hughes’ glazes were often based on locally sourced wood ash. When fired at a high temprature in a reduction kiln the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where he lived and worked.
