About MeStoneware footed dish glazed all over in greeny-brown glaze and pale blue speckled ash glaze from Dalemain, in Cumbria. It is decorated with various groups of white slip dots around inner rim and a pattern of 4 groups of 5 white slip dots.
Edward Hughes frequently incorporated wood ash, obtained from local hardwoods, in his glazes. When fired at a high temprature the glazes achieved rich mottled colours, reflecting the Cumbrian landscape where Hughes lived and worked. He named his glazes after their origin, which in this instance was the fireplace at Dalemain, the country house near Ullswater.
