General History:
30/08/1862:
Rewards for Heroic Act. —We lately recorded the presentation, through the- Mercantile Marine Board at Glasgow, behalf of the Lords of the Committee of the Privy Council for Trade, of a Telescope to Captain G. Dalgarno of the COMMODORE of Aberdeen, as a reward, in the following circumstances :—The COMMODORE arrived at Greenock in June last. While on her outward passage from that port to Trinidad, she met in with the barque HOPE of Fleetwood, with grain and four from New York, in a sinking state, with boats all swept away, and crew quite worn out with pumping incessantly for twenty days previously ; and after great risk, succeeded in rescuing the crew, fifteen in all, and transferred them to a fruiter off St. Michael’s. The weather at the time was most terrific[...] the danger was indeed so great that the master of the COMMODORE did not feel quite justified in incurring the risk without first referring to the crew, who at once gallantly volunteered to bring off the crew of the vessel in distress, and fortunately succeeded in their humane endeavours. The crew of the Hope were safely landed at Kinsale. On Saturday last, Mr. David M‘Millan, late second mate, and Mr. Arthur Roberts, late first mate of the COMMODORE, both belonging to Aberdeen, were presented, at the Shipping Office here, in presence of a member of the local Mercantile Marine Board, who complimented them on their intrepidity, with £2 each, as reward from the Board of Trade. Other two seamen, who completed the rescuing boat’s crew, have not been found their names are Thomas Harley and John Smith.

Sheriff Thomson gave judgement in action by Isaac Swan, Chief Officer of ship COMMODORE, of Aberdeen, against Caledonian Railway Co., for damages in consequence of non delivery to him at Sunderland in June 1874 of parcel containing certificates necessary to his retaining his situation. He accidentally left his papers on train from Aberdeen and telegraphed for them to be despatched to him.
