Letter reads:
"Dear Sir, There is an opening for an apprentice in Aberdeen just now, and you will require to present yourself at 1 King Street, on Wednesday first, and be ready to commence work at once. Yours faithfully, James H. Brown, agent."
McBey references the apprenticeship in his autobiography:
"[...] I had to commence work in the bank at Aberdeen in two days; [...] I was to be on trial for two months which would count as the beginning of a five years' apprenticeship; [...] my salary would be £10 for the first year, rising by £5 annually"
This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this letter.
