About MeFantin-Latour's particular skill lay in the way that he could imitate the tones and textures of flowers, recognising that each have their individual characteristics. The particular delicacy of this species is expertly delineated and emphasised by the simplicity of the composition, which imparts a mood of still repose on the subject.

The casual treatment of the flowers in this painting is similarly found in the work of Manet but probably has its roots in Chardin. Fantin-Latour's flower paintings continued this French tradition and proved particularly popular in Britain.
