About MeThe Aberdeen artist James Cassie primarily painted the local landscape and north-east coastline. In 1857 he had completed an oil painting of this same scene, the ancient ruined castle of Dunnottar on its bleak and forbidding promontory - this watercolour, however, is a later version of 1864. Cassie had a preference for early morning light, but rather than dramatic effects he strove for a naturalistic rendition of the play of light on sea and land. His best pictures, as here, present a calm and contemplative mood.
