About MeKing Edward II silver penny belonging to Aberdeen's St Nicholas Street hoard. Found in 1984, this hoard comprises 2538 coins, including coins from England, Scotland, Ireland and the continent, as well as 54 imitation coins.

Coin Type: Penny, Class 10 cf5
Coin Issuer: Edward II
Date Minted: 1309-1310
Mint Location: Durham
Find Date: 1984
Obverse: Forward facing crowned head with broad, curling hair framed with text inscription.
Reverse: Centrally placed long cross with three pellets in each corner and text ringing the outer edge.
Manufacture Method: Hammered
Condition: The reverse is in good condition at its centre, but is heavily worn on its edge, with much of its text rubbed smooth or badly corroded. The obverse is very worn over its king portrait and large sections of its text are illegible due to being rubbed away or clipped off. The coin features a special symbol referencing Bishop Anthony Bek of Durham on its obverse, with the inscription cross being a cross moline. This is a symbol used by the benedictine order of monks and Durham's mint.
