About MeIan Fleming trained as a printmaker, specialising in etching and engraving. However, he enjoyed the portability of the watercolour medium, which allowed him to carry on painting when attached to the Pioneer Corps of the British Army at the end of the Second World War.

He continued to work in watercolour after the War and on sketching trips made many forays into the Scottish countryside. Here he applies his drawing skills to the details of grasses and teasels in the foreground of 'Fieldert' whereas in the background he uses pure watercolour to delineate the landscape.
