About MeHarold Gilman attended the Slade School of Art in London and received his introduction to the Camden Town Group through his fellow student, Spencer Frederic Gore. This portrait illustrates Gilman's early style of painting before he joined the progressive art group.

Rooted in the tonal tradition of James McNeill Whistler, the pose and subdued palette are reminiscent of Whistler's influential portrait of his mother. The sitter in Gilman's painting is his first wife, Grace Canedy, whom he met in Madrid in 1903-4. Their marriage did not last long as Grace did not approve of Gilman's career as an artist. She left him in 1909, taking their three children with her.

More About Me
In a setting reminiscent of Whistler's famous portrait of his mother, the sitter was the artist's wife, who disapproved of his career choice and left with their three children
